PEMF What Is It?

When discussing PEMF, we are talking about pulsed electromagnetic energy (EM), not static magnetic energy as with a TENS machine or the refrigerator magnet or an older-style magnetic bed pad.

“Bringing the body back into balance restores inner peace and harmony”.  I believe that a well-informed client is usually satisfied with the outcome of their health procedures and therapies.

Prior to agreeing to the use of new medical procedures or even alternative therapies the participant(s) should have a basic understanding about what the procedure or therapy is, how the procedure or therapy works, and what short and long-term benefits they can look forward to experiencing from the procedure or therapy.

PEMF was understood and practiced in several ancient civilizations. Five hundred years ago, Paracelsus a Swiss physician and alchemist wondered if diseases could be manipulated, by magnets using lodestones as the best magnets available then.   But, natural lodestones are quite weak and few people paid much attention to his ideas until the discovery of carbon-steel magnets in the 1700′s.

During the 1800′s, most of the discoveries relating electricity to magnetism were made by the early pioneers of our modern technical world, men such as Gauss, Weber, Faraday and Maxwell among others.   One of the more interesting magnetic theories postulates something called “Magnetic Field Deficiency Syndrome.” It is offered as an explanation of bio-magnetic effects by Dr. Kyochi Nakagawa of Japan. The Earth’s magnetic field is not fixed in position or strength. In the last hundred years, it has weakened on the average by about 6 percent. In the last thousand years, it has fallen nearly 30 percent. Dr. Nakagawa argues that since humans evolved in a magnetic field, it is necessary for proper health. A falling magnetic field puts us at risk and magnetic therapy makes up the deficit.

Historically, as far back as 1890, the American Electro-Therapeutic Association conducted annual conferences on the therapeutic use of electricity and electrical devices by physicians on ailing patients. Some involved current flow through the patient, while others were electrically powered devices. At first, only direct current (DC) devices were utilized in the medical doctor’s office for relieving pain.  One hundred years ago, Nicola Tesla illustrated the direct influence of PEMF effects, and illustration of agglutination reversal, and enhancement of cell field strength.

Today, PEMF (pulsing electromagnetic therapy) is approved by the FDA to promote the healing of serious bone fractures. And powerful electromagnets are used in brain and muscle research to generate currents strong enough to fire nerves that trigger sensations and flex muscles.

The modern clinical application of electro-biology in North America began in 1971 when Friedenberg described their success in the healing of a nonunion fracture treated with 10 micro amps of direct current delivered with stainless steel electrodes. Avoiding the invasive nature of Friedenberg’s direct currents, Dr. Andrew Bassett at Columbia University Medical Center introduced a new approach for the treatment of non-healing bone fractures and pseudarthroses that employed very specific, biphasic low frequency electromagnetic signals. Public awareness also increased in the mid-1970s amidst reports of successful enhancement of the speed and endurance of racehorses treated with electromagnetic fields. Based on the published work of Dr. Bassett, in 1979 the FDA allowed electromagnetic fields to be used in the USA for non-union and delayed union fractures. A decade later the FDA allowed the use of pulsed radiofrequency electromagnetic fields for the treatment of pain and edema in superficial soft tissues. It is now commonly accepted that weak electromagnetic fields are capable of initiating various beneficial biological processes including healing for delayed fractures, pain relief, and modulation of muscle tone and spasm.

Here are just a few of the reasons why PEMF is gaining acceptance in integrative medicine and holistic therapies. in the rejuvenation and ongoing wellness of yourself, your patients-clients-family-friends, and pets – PEMF:

“Electromagnetic energy is the fundamental energy upon which all living organisms depend”.   Prof. Dr. Werner Heisenberg, German Physicist and Nobel Prize Winner

PEMFs have been used extensively for decades for many conditions and medical disciplines, and results can be seen in animals as well as humans. The National Institutes of Health have made PEMFs a priority for research. In fact, many PEMF devices have already been approved by the FDA, some specifically to fuse broken bones, wound healing, chronic pain, tissue swelling, and treating depression. Most therapeutic PEMF devices are considered safe by various standards and organizations.  Thus, as mentioned above PEMF works to:

  • Reduce pain, inflammation, the effects of stress on the body, and platelet adhesion.

  • Improve energy, circulation, blood and tissue oxygenation, sleep quality, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, the uptake of nutrients, cellular detoxification, and the ability to regenerate cells.

  • Balance the immune system and stimulate RNA and DNA.

  • Accelerate repair of bone and soft tissue.

  • Relax muscles.

PEMF ASTRONAUTS & YOU | Cooperation between NASA and PEMF Manufacturers

For more than 60 years, NASA has been aware of and used PEMF technology in various forms of research.

This is a high degree of recognition and underlines PEMF technology’s widespread acceptance as part of a research and development project, NASA has chosen different types of PEMF equipment as a cooperation partner for the development of new space suits at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. This joint venture paved the way for the integration of PEMF technology into manned space flight. - See more at:

The following article, entitled "PULSED ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS - A COUNTERMEASURE FOR BONE LOSS AND MUSCLE ATROPHY", authored by researchers at the Johnson Space Center, demonstrates the usefulness of technologies in preventing "space-induced bone loss and muscle atrophy".  These NASA researchers also endorse a type of PEMF technology, (Helmholtz Coil), which was found to provide purer, "more stable magnetic control".   The outcome of modern civilization is that people and animals are being bombarded by harmful EMFs (electromagnetic fields), depriving them of proper exposure to Earth's vital healthy PEMFs.  By introducing properly combined frequencies and pulses, which closely resemble Earth-based PEMFs, PEMF devices similar to, the iMRS 2000, effectively serves to protect, rebalance, and revitalize our bodily systems, at a cellular level.

A seminal NASA study, proving the effectiveness and deep-seated health-enhancing impact of PEMF therapy, is entitled, "PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MOLECULAR GENETIC EFFECTS OF TIME-VARYING ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS ON HUMAN NEURONAL CELLS". This was a 4-year study on, "...normal human neural progenitor cells...", or nerve stem cells, which concluded that synthetically applied (time-varying) pulsed electromagnetic fields, rapidly increased their growth rate up to 4.0 times, therefore improving stem cell viability, and increased gene-sites for collagen production.  PEMFs are, ..."useful for numerous purposes, including repairing traumatized tissues and moderating some neurodegenerative diseases (i.e., Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease, etc....".

When the first astronauts and cosmonauts were launched into orbit, where the Earth’s electromagnetic field was very weak it took only 1-2 hours before they were greatly afflicted – mentally, emotionally, and physically.  On long space flights, they lost 80% of their bone density.  Obviously, this was a major problem, demanding a solution.

Fortunately, circa 1952, German physicist Dr. W.O. Schumann mathematically calculated the Earths predominant EM frequency to be 7.83 Hz.  Using this information, later space travelers were equipped with a Schumann EM generator to simulate the Earth’s EM field, and the problem of “space sickness” disappeared.  Problem solved.

Then, someone got another bright idea.  Since it worked so well in space, what could it do back on Earth?  This led to the birth of the PEMF wellness industry, initially addressing bone growth and un-united fractures (non-unions) and later branching out into over 200 human conditions.

Beneficial Effects of Electromagnetic Fields, Dr. C.A. Bassett, Columbia University (1993).

“The range of treatable Ills…include nerve regeneration, wound healing, graft behavior, diabetes, and myocardial and cerebral ischemia (heart attack and stroke), among other conditions.”  (  Evidence-based Use of Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy in Clinical Plastic Surgery (2009)

“This review shows that plastic surgeons have at hand a powerful tool with no known side effects for the adjunctive, non-invasive, nonpharmacologic manage of postoperative pain and edema.”  (

When comparing PEMF as a wellness modality to other technologies, just ask yourself one, simple, key question.  What will kill me the fastest if I am deprived of it?  This immediately tells you what is critical to wellness.  Obviously, oxygen is at the top of that list – 1-2 minutes without oxygen and you’re a goner.  Next, we think of water, but you can go days without water and, of course, weeks without food.

Now, how critical is Earth EM energy to THE survival of the human body?  The experience of the early space travelers was a big hint.  To investigate eh effect of magnetic field deficiency, Dr. Valarie Hunt, placed 2 human subjects in a Mu metal cage to simulate a near-zero Magnetic Field Environment.  [google “Mu metal wiki” for this unique nickel-iron ally].  To everyone’s amazement, in just a few minutes they began to sob and said they felt like they were “falling apart” emotionally.  In a few more minutes, the started losing muscle control and coordination and exhibited abnormal cardiac readings, forcing a stop to the experiment before they died of a heart attack.  This experiment established man’s absolute dependence on Earth EM energy – just a few minutes without it and we die.  Thus, on the scale of what will kill me the fastest if deprived it, Earth EM energy takes crucial 2nd place, immediately after oxygen!

So, if you want to live to be 100 and smiling, a full-body PEMF device gives you the edge to counter the harmful ElectroSmog (the high frequency, high intensity, EM bombarding us daily from cell phones, computers, microwaves, radars, satellites, smart meters, Wi-FI, wireless routers, etc.) that assaults the body’s repair and wellness mechanisms.  Starting with radar in WWII and culminating today - never, in the evolution of the human body, has it (our bodies) been subjected to such a massive, high energy frequency bombardment, estimated by experts to be 100-200 million times that reaching us naturally from the sun.  As a consequence, we need Earth-compatible PEMF energy daily for protection.

The body's natural regulation mechanisms always ensure optimal adaptation to changes in our environment (temperature, water, air, diet). This means that the best possible function of our organism is always ensured. This also means that, in the event these regulation processes are overloaded (illness), the body itself attempts to rectify the defective functions that have occurred. The PEMF technology supports these repair activities (healing process) of our body by improving the working conditions of all cells involved – because an improved microcirculation is the foundation of this process.

Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields: How They Heal - By William Pawluk, MD, MSc  Having healthy cells is not a passive process. Active, regular tuning-up of our cells is not only feasible, but also necessary to slow aging and reduce the risk of cell dysfunction. We are, after all, only as healthy as our cells. Imperceptible cell dysfunction that is not corrected early can lead to disease. Fine-tuning can be done daily in only minutes, using pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs). In addition, when there is a known imbalance (when symptoms are present) or there is a known disease or condition, PEMF treatments, used either alone or along with other therapies, can often help cells rebalance dysfunction faster.

HOW DO CELLS REACT TO PEMF (Pulse Electro-Magnetic Field Waves)?

PEMF therapy can improve restricted circulation in the smallest blood vessels and thus support and boost the body's own self-healing and regeneration processes.  The circulatory system is the human body’s supply system. 75% of this unique inner highway is within the area of the smallest blood vessels - the body’s

(microcirculation) system.  Where you aware that you have 100 trillion cells? And that our blood cells are mini-power plants? Did you know that they perform a dual function?   They supply our internal tissues and organs with nutrients and oxygen and they also remove waste products from within the cell.  This process also occurs in our body’s largest organ - our skin.   Only with the help of these supply and disposal processes can the body’s cells fulfill their varied, life-supporting tasks and provide the body with energy, and control our aging process.

The heart ensures that the blood cells move through our bodies circulatory system. However: In total the blood corpuscles must supply and cleanse an area of over 100,000 kilometers. Since the heart cannot manage this on its own, it needs help.  The smallest blood vessels drive the blood cells with their own pumping movements (vasomotion) and support the heart in this way.

Additionally, they regulate blood flow with their movements in such a way that areas requiring a greater supply at a given time are better supplied with blood than those with a periodically lower requirement. Example: During sporting activities, the muscles have a high requirement, and the brain needs less. When learning, exactly the opposite applies.

The pumping movements of the smallest blood vessels help the blood cells to do their job - precisely where it is most needed. The results are impressive: The body’s defenses are strengthened, physical and mental performance levels rise, diseases are better combated and medicines reach their goal more easily.

PEMF can also be a valuable support in amateur and professional sports. With adequate circulation in the smallest blood vessels, shorter warming up and cooling down phases are

possible, as well as faster regeneration and therefore more effective training sessions. Ideally, micro injuries can also be repaired immediately and in this way more serious subsequent injuries prevented in advance.

PEMF strengthens the immune reaction, activates self-healing forces. Health prophylaxis preventative – overall wellness. An organism that is constantly supplied with sufficient nutrients and oxygen operates at peak performance.Improved health coupled with the clear improvement of sleep increases productive activity.

Microcirculation is the largest and functionally most important component of circulation in the human organism. It is active in the fine, extensive network of the smallest blood vessels. Although the human network is considerably more detailed than that of a tree, for example, it is nonetheless a good example for illustrating how important the small vessels are for "on site" supply.

In humans, circulation in the tiniest of vessels, that is, microcirculation, fulfils vital transport requirements: Circulation feeds oxygen and nutrients to tissue and organs, disposes of metabolic by-products and supports the immune system.   Restricted or defective microcirculation results in faster aging of cells and is the cause of numerous health complaints and illnesses.

Too much stress, too little sleep, an unbalanced diet, unhealthy lifestyle habits, illnesses and of course aging slow down the pumping movements of the smallest blood vessels. This affects the overwhelming majority of all people. This means that the blood cells move far too slowly and can no longer fulfill their tasks to the extent required. In the long term, an inadequate supply to the tissue and organs leads to declining physical and mental performance levels, pain, disorders, and illness.

PEMF TECHNOLOGY: Effect on microcirculation

PEMF research has over many years achieved leading-edge results in terms of the biorhythm of local and external regulation flows in microcirculation. The core of PEMF technology effectively stimulates restricted or defective microcirculation. Consequently, PEMF supports the cellular regulation mechanisms in the human body for prevention, healing, recovery, and regenerative processes.

  • Improved supply and waste disposal for organs and tissue

  • Support for healing of wounds and sports injuries

  • Support for the immune system

  • Reduced susceptibility to infections

  • Better resistance to free radicals

  • Increase in performance capacity as well as maximum load intensity

  • Shorter regeneration times in sport training

  • Better effectiveness of training and reduced risk of injury during sport

  • Reduced consequences of stress

Research has indicated consistently that PEMF increases the reaction capability of white blood cells. This enables them to become active quickly when external dangers threaten. On this basis, the entire immune system becomes capable of protecting the body better and more effectively in cases of infection or when the body is under threat, as a direct result of stress or damaging environmental factors.

Healing of wounds is a series of different processes in the body.  First of all, the tissue destroyed by the injury (cell groups) must be dissolved and removed. Only then can new, healthy tissue be formed at the location of the injury. This requires effective input from all cells involved in the process. To be able to perform in this manner, the cells must be optimally supplied with nutrition and disposed of; a process that can only be ensured if the affected areas have well-functioning microcirculation.  PEMF ensures optimal microcirculation here, and in so doing supports the effectiveness of the cells. The result: faster healing of wounds.  PEMF is approved by Medicare in 2004 for treatment of Stage III and Stage IV Wounds.
